Vasant Naik won the prestigious Second All Goa Open Rapid Chess Tournament organized in memory of Late Lcdr Gopal S Sukhthankar by Parent Teacher Association of Mushtifund High auspices School, Panaji in association of Clube Tennis De Gaspar Dias, Miramar under the of Goa Chess Association.
He was awarded the championship trophy at the hands of Shripad Naik, Hon. M.P.(North Goa) and President of Goa Olympic Association at the prize distribution function held on Sunday evening. Gurudatta Bhakta, Secretary General of Goa Olympic Association and a prominent businessmen and sports administrator was the guest of honour. Mr Gaurish Dhond, businessmen and social worker and Mr Ashish Keni, President of Goa Chess Association were present as special invitees.
The second place in open category was bagged by Wilson Cruz, while last year’s champion Rushabh Naik secured third place and Anant Prabhudessai bagged the fourth place. The other top 16 players were: Amey Audi, Niraj Saripalli, PM Kantak, Anirudha Bhat, Vagesh Tendulakr, Sumit Asnodkar, M Bharat, Nandini Saripalli, Prasanna Swamy, Diptesh Karamalkar, Rajat , Riddhi Zantye, Pradeep Kulkarni, Shiv Swamy, Shane Braganza, Snehil Shetty.
In U-7 age category Shivnak Kuncolienkar, Sahil Dessai, Chopdekar Gunjal,Alaina Pereira begged the prizes
In the U-9 age category the first four prizes were bagged by Jayesh Shettigar, Viraj Parab, Svera Braganza, and Merlynn Mendonca.
In U-11 category winners were: Milind Gawas, Saish Avdi, Aditi Prabhugaokar and Sakshi Naik Gaokar.
In U-13, Saurabh Prabhu, Tanad Bandodkar, Sonali Kelkar, and Aishwarya Thorat were the winners.
The following players of Mushtifund High School were awarded special prizes: Vaibhav Pednekar, Sumukh Pinge, Sriram Parab, Sweta Koyande, Chetan Mahale, Ishika Chopdekar, Rohit Naik, Aditya Wagh, Vedant Dessai, Pranav Shirodkar. All these players were awarded trophies and cash prizes sponsored by Ms Aarti Sukhthankar, ex-Headmistress of Mushtifund High School who instituted these prizes in memoery of her late father LcCdr Gopal Sukhthankar.
Special prizes for four promising players that were sponsored by Professor Vikas Chodankar of Goa Engineering College were awarded to Milind Gawas, Sonali Kerkar, Vaibhav Pednekar and Sumukh Pinge.
Speaking on occasion, Shripad Naik lauded the effort taken by players and their parents and stressed on importance of sports for a healthy life. Earlier, Prashant Kuncoliekar, Chairman of Mushtifund PTA welcomed the gathering. Ms Aparna Chari, Headmistress and Ms Arti Sukhthankar also spoke on the occasion. Ramrao Wagh introduced the guests, Mr Sunil Kher proposed vote of thanks while Ms Soniya Sulakhe compered the programme. Mr Dattaram Pinge, chief Arbitrator announced the winners while Ms Beena Shankhwalkar, Secretray, PTA coordinated the prize distribution function. The guests were presented with mementoes at the hands of Prashant Kuncolikar.
